About

The Livingston Faith and Race Project

The Faith and Race Project (FRP) is a coalition of people from different faith traditions who hope, pray and work together to promote love, respect and inclusion of people of all races in our community.  Our events and activities aim to increase understanding of and opposition to all forms of racism, to promote respect for people of all races, and to oppose inequity and exclusion in Livingston County.

The Faith and Race Project is not part of any organization. Being part of our journey to being a more welcoming and just community is FREE.  There are no dues or membership fees.  Our activities are created and developed by our core group of unpaid volunteers.

There are many worthy social justice issues. The Faith and Race Project focuses our limited time and energy of participants on the issues of race to maximize its impact in this sphere. Our independence also allows us to take political action to change unjust laws, policies and practices, and to identify and support public leaders who share our values of racial equity and inclusion.

Our past activities have included

  • The Faith and Racial Healing Program – a 9-week program of prayer and awareness
  • Lectures on the history of race relations in Livingston County
  • Demonstrating our commitment to love all people by walking together in the Brighton July 4th Parade
  • The Bridges book club that explores books on race.

Future activities of the Faith and Race Project will continue to focus on racial understanding, justice and inclusion in our community through activities that have five overlapping objectives:

  1. Explore how our faith intersects with and guides our perspectives on race relations through dialog, discernment and prayer.

2. Increase personal understanding of the attitudes and biases of oneself and others towards people of different races and ethnic origins.

3. Create opportunities for all citizens to unite in public demonstrations of love for all people

4. Identify and advocate against specific laws, policies and practices that create adverse impacts on People of Color and on their opportunity to thrive in every aspect of their lives

5. Explore and disseminate the “diversity dividends” . . . specific advantages to everyone that are derived from elimination of prejudices and barriers to racial inclusion in our community.

All residents who desire a community that respects and welcomes all people are invited to participate in the work and the activities of the Faith and Race Project.
